Our Style Car Club

Lowriding Their Way Since 1983

Edgar HoillWriter

Many things were introduced to society in 1983, including the Mc Donald's Chicken McNugget, the first Mac personal computer, and the birth of Our Style Car Club, which happily joined the Lowrider community. Although many different car clubs were established in the '80's, many of them have since come and gone. The difference between Our Style and these long lost clubs can be found in its dedicated members, who have helped this car club maintain its niche in the community for the past 27 years. Just three years shy of celebrating their 30th anniversary, this club shows no signs of slowing down.

The club was established in the city of Paramount, California, at Spencer Park, located on the corner of Downey St. and Paramount Boulevard. The club started when a few close friends gathered every Sunday to relax and kick it, enjoying quality time with their family and their cars. Intending to keep a close-knit family, Javier Luna took on the role of club president, and named the club "Our Style" as a testament to the club's family oriented foundation and unique collection of automobiles. Along with club president Javier, the club's six man roster included Junior, Cipriano, Shorty, Larry, and Mike, who remained focused on building up the club's name, while building high caliber rides. Other riders started to take notice of the club, thanks in part to their dedication to the community in the form of softball games, which Our Style arranged between fellow clubs like Sabor, Nitecrowd, Newstars, and Stylistics. Activities like this one brought the neighborhood clubs together, and encouraged the young members to keep away from gangs and to stay off drugs. The teams would play each other at the different neighborhood parks, so there would be no scheduling conflicts in the way of letting the teams enjoy the friendly but competitive games. The final game always began with a caravan of Lowriders cruising into Elysian Park, where the winning team would be awarded a BBQ and an appreciation plaque.

In 1986, the club was moved to Long Beach, where they would hang out at Omega Burgers to meet before cruising down to their favorite spots like Downtown Long Beach, Whittier Boulevard, or Mile Square Park in Santa Ana, CA. With the move also came leadership change, and new officers were elected. Joe Hernandez was elected president, Salvador Gonzales became vice president, and Adrian Perez was elected as sergeant at arms. They started to organize more events, including picnics and dances, and soon enough, these events became filled to capacity, as the many people in attendance always came to show love for the club.

Today, the club continues to move forward, picking up new members, and unfortunately losing a few along the way. The positive energy and family style bond the club promotes have kept Our Style alive and well for all these years. Our Style still holds monthly meetings in Paramount Park, and is still greatly involved in giving back to the community. The club boasts well over 30 fully active members, and always represents well at car shows and Lowrider events. As the club eyes the future, they aim to have bigger car shows, dances, and picnics. A new chapter was established in Los Angeles a few years ago, as the club is rapidly expanding by adding new chapters all over the nation, with membership being filled by like-minded individuals who share the club's zest for life and passion for Lowriding. Throughout the course of its nearly three decades of history, Our Style Car Club has been positively representing the Lowrider community, and you can be sure that they will be here to help expand our culture for many years to come.
