In 1920's, station wagons were known as "depot hack' as they were used to transport passengers and cargo after they got off the trains. The design was based off a truck platform mainly wood-based. Steel replaced wood following WWII technology advances and the station wagon designs reached its peeked in the '60's as seen here.
